Jewellery to bring you back to the seaside

Summer at the seaside

Come warmer days and I dream of the seaside. Of the seagulls flying over the ocean, of coastal wildlife, of bare feet walking over the warm sand. And when I bring these features into Creatureshire, I play with them to bring you a joyful experience of discovery and serenity.

None of these pieces of jewellery are entirely new. The lighthouses have been around for some time as well as the seals. They were both created while I lived in Scotland, just by the North Sea. The seals were inspired by a large colony of grey seals and common seals that lives in Fife.

Seals chilling out on the beach

The lighthouses came from the many lovely lighthouses that sit on Portuguese and Scottish shores. I have always seen them as guiding lights not just for ships, but also a place of safety for humans.

The seagulls were created earlier this year, and their design was inspired by the common seagull (larus canus). I took particular joy in their soft grey wings and their bright yellow beak.

Garden bugs

Bees, ladybugs and snail post earrings in a strawberry plant.

Spring is all over the place. Leaves are sprouting in their trees, flowers are blossoming and there’s a humming sound all around from busy insects. Spring is a time of bounty, of growing and blooming. Out of my window I see the leaves unfurl and everywhere there are pops of colour.

At Creatureshire colour is bursting to! I’ve been growing a strawberry plant out of paper to house these bees, ladybugs and snails’ adorable earrings. They look happy and lively in their new home and I do hope that they will bring you joy to!

They are now available back in the shop!

Red fox :: Raposa vermelha

Creatureshire is welcoming red foxes. They have been wandering in the hills, playing among the berry bushes and getting to know all sorts of friendly creatures. Their favorite spot seems to be the fence by the chestnut trees, where they meet with other friendly folk from around here.

Foxes aren’t entirely new to Creatureshire… they already existed as earrings and they have been in the shop for a while. But I felt that a brooch was missing so I designed it and revamped the earrings with new colours. They will be available in the shop soon. I do hope you like them!

Robins are birds of strange habits… they are known to build their nests in surprising places, using tins or any recipients they can find, and using building features. In the UK they are also associated with the postal service, as the first postmen used red waistcoats and were known as robins.

Recently I was asked to make a robin charm for a bracelet and it was a lot of fun making this tiny bird. To accompany it I also made a sugar mouse, as a reminder of the childhood treats that my customer and her sister used to eat.

Beavers :: Castores

Creatureshire is welcoming a new critter! They have already started building dams in the rivers and seem to be really delighted by the young willows that grow by the water.

Beavers are truly amazing animals, with the capacity to change their environment in a way that actually makes room for other species to thrive. Aside from being remarkable engineers they are also very cute, so there are plenty of motives to like them.

So I got my hands busy to to bring these new characters alive. The brooches came out with beavers eating their favourite food, tender branches, and the earrings are a combination of beavers and wood logs. I really hope that you like them!

You can find the new earrings and brooches in the shop.

Happy Birthday :: Feliz Aniversário

Creatureshire was launched a year ago… it doesn’t seem that long but it feels really great to celebrate this date with you. Creatureshire has become a wonderful place with your support to all the species that live around here.

I remember how excited I was to present the new brand and the new logo. Mafalda did an amazing job with her lovely illustration and it all came together really well!

Creatureshire is a magical part of my life, one which inspires my curiosity about the natural world and makes my hands play. Every new creature is a challenge! I always learn something new: how they live, where they wander and how they are shaped. And then I get my hands on the clay and I start playing until a curious being peeks out of my hands. For the past year they were quite a few!

It’s amazing to have you around to share this project with you. I really hope that you keep stopping by.

Happy Birthday Creatureshire!

Lembro-me do quão entusiasmada estava para vos apresentar a nova marca e o logotipo.

I am so happy to finally announce the new collection! Spring is just around the corner, and while it is still a little cold around here, colour is popping everywhere while animals and birds are getting busier.

The new collection was inspired by ponds and their creatures. It’s impressive how much life you can find on them, even when they are really tiny. There you can meet frogs, birds, dragonflies and all sorts of aquatic plants. In the larger ones you may find mammals like water voles or beavers.

Creatureshire is now welcoming mallard ducks, dippers, water lilies and European tree frogs. While the mallards and the water lilies are a familiar sight for most of us, I couldn’t resist the dippers and the frogs.

I came to know dippers on the stream close to my home. They sit wagging on rocks until they take off in the most breath-taking flights. The fly really fast just above the water and they dive to get their own food.

The reason for the European tree frog is a little less obvious. While I was researching frogs I came across this species. Although they actually live in trees, I thought they were really cute, so in Creatureshire they came close to the water.

All the new species will be soon at the shop, and they will be available as earrings and brooches. They can also be made into pendants by custom order. To celebrate Spring and the new collection, until the end of March you can get 10% using the code SPRING15 on any orders above £10.00.

I hope that you enjoy the new collection!

In Creatureshire everyone has been calling out for Spring. For the last couple of months I have been busy preparing the new collection and in a week time all the new creatures will pop up just in time to celebrate Spring!

The new collection was inspired by pond creatures. I must say the biggest difficulty was to keep it to a small selection, as there are so many interesting creatures living close to the water. It was really challenging to bring all these species alive and I can’t wait to share them with you.

I hope that you enjoy this sneak peak into the creation stages!

Tigers are really impressive animals and recently a customer asked me if I could make a tiger brooch. I immediately said yes and the result was a charming tiger!

The Bengal tiger is a strong hunter, very territorial that hunts mostly at night. His diet consists exclusively of meat, and conflicts with humans have always been very common as their habitats overlap. They enjoy open grasslands and tropical mangroves where their stripes provide camouflage among the tall grass. Unlike other cats, they really enjoy being in the water cooling off or swimming.

Currently it is estimated that there are about 2500 Bengal tigers in the wild and they are an endangered species. The main threats are conflict with humans and poaching. You can learn more about them here.

“Not only was the Tiger produced in a relatively quick turnaround, he is also amazing to look at. The packaging (little note, wrapping and the picture on the envelope) all show how much attention to detail Creatureshire puts into the product.” S.M.

Giant Panda :: Panda Gigante

As I was preparing for the Bear collection I thought of working on all the existing bear species. I ended up working on three specific species but in the back of my mind I kept thinking of growing the family. Now the Giant Panda is joining the American black bear, the Grizzly and the Polar bears.

Giant Pandas live in forests in Central China. They love bamboo and they can eat up to 20 kg a day. Yet, being a bear, it’s digestive system was initially devised to eat meat, and they are unable to digest the cellulose contained in the bamboo. They overcome this problem with the help of microbes who digest it for them… is it not  clever?

The Giant Panda series includes brooches and earrings. To keep the pandas happy, there are also bamboo earrings. What to you think of them?

You can find the Panda Series wearable creatures in the shop.

A série Panda Gigante inclui pregadeiras e brincos.
