Kings and queens :: Reis e rainhas

Good news! After three years and a half, I have completed the chess set (yes, that is how long it took). The kings and the queens have finally made their appearance to command their armies into mighty battles, and they promise lots of joyous games during afternoon breaks and at the end of the day.

I couldn’t resist giving these last bunch long capes, as it is fit for royalty, and ornate beards and hair. They came out nicely and they fit perfectly in the chess set.

And now, onwards to exciting matches!

Autumn in Creatureshire :: Outono em Creatureshire

Autumn is arriving gingerly. The early light has golden tones and the trees are showing the first flecks of red and gold.

Creatureshire is buzzing with life after a lazy summer. The squirrels are collecting nuts, sheep are grazing in the sunshine, and bees are making sweet honey. At the end of the day all the animals get together to watch the sunset by the chestnut trees while they share stories.

I couldn’t resist creating their favorite corner. The chestnut trees came out in shades of green, orange and gold. The hills and mountains lend a dreamy atmosphere to the scenario. I invite you to come in and share this space with all the lovely creatures around!

Os esquilos andam atarefados a colher frutos secos, as ovelhas pastam sob o sol ainda quente e as abelhas andam a produzir mel doce.

Do you remember the chess set in which I have been working on? It’s been a while since I last posted any updates but I am now getting closer to finishing it.

One of the reasons why this is such a lengthy project is that I started with the idea of making Vikings against Scots, but I really didn’t plan how the pieces would be. I have been thinking of them and I ended up with a lot of new ideas for the figures. For instance, I thought of making horses for the knights, but at the last minute I decided to go for something different instead.

Since the Vikings were well known for roaming the seas in their boats, I couldn’t resist using that idea for the knights. I shaped the bow of each boat with an animal like figure, to make them livelier and I have completed each one with shields to add some colour.

For the Scots I had initially had thought of horses, with the idea of the wild horses roaming the Highlands, and after a while I started thinking about the Loch Ness monster. As it turned out, the monster gave way to dragons.

These were some of the most fun pieces to make and they fit nicely with with the remaining figures. Now we only miss the kings and queens!

One of the things that I have been enjoying lately is the creation of habitats made from paper, often complemented with polymer clay accessories. I have always thought of creating some sort of environment for the species in Creatureshire and it took me a few attempts to find something that worked. I had tried watercolour backgrounds but it was only when I started using paper cutting scenarios that I started to feel the creatures at ease in their own home.

The first scenarios I made in paper were for the bear collection: a forest for the grizzly and the black bears, and an iceberg landscape for the polar bear. Since then I have worked on some more scenarios and I am getting more at ease with the medium.

It has been a huge learning curve and I feel that I still have a lot to learn, but I am also having a lot of fun doing it. I get really surprised once I start looking at the photographs and everything seems to be in place.

Have you been enjoying the new habitats? I would love to have your feedback and suggestions!

The Holidays are just around the corner! I can almost feel the warmth of spices coming out of the oven and the anticipation of the lovely gifts being unwrapped by family and friends. I like to make each present special by adding gift tags, illustrations or colourful yarn.

This year, inspired by the bear collection I made some gift tags, which can also be a nice ornament to hang on the tree. You can find the instructions bellow the photos, and if you make them, do share them. I love to see how the tutorials come out off your hands. Have fun!

How to make your own bear ornaments

Equipment:

  • Polymer clay in your favourite colours (I have used red, green and pearl)
  • Bear template (copy it from the image above)
  • Something to roll the clay (you can use an empty glass jar)
  • Baking parchment (to use as a work surface)
  • Something with a pointy end to write and make texture effects
  • A craft knife

How to make it:

  1.  Work the polymer clay in your hands until it becomes soft.
  2.  Place the polymer clay in a sheet of baking parchment and make a sheet by rolling it with your improvised rolling pin.
  3. Place the bear template on top of your sheet. Holding the template carefully cut around using a craft knife.
  4. With your pointy tool make a hole close to the top. Use your tool to write a message, the name of the person you are offering the gift, or for other decorations. You can also add other pieces of polymer clay in different colours to make it livelier.
  5. Have fun!

Como fazer os enfeites

Material:

  2. Colocar a massa no papel manteiga e estender com o rolo improvisado.
  3. Colocar o modelo do urso sobre a massa. Segurando com cuidado, cortar à volta do modelo com o x-acto.
  5. Divirtam-se!

Aerobatic dragonflies :: Libelinhas acrobatas

During the last months of winter I started to resent the grey weather. I turned out to bright colours and got some inspiration from the new dragonfly earrings I designed last year. I thought these would be perfect to fly around ears and sweaters this spring. I ended up making a whole series of earrings and brooches, all in different color combinations, currently available at the shop.

The new dragonflies seem to enjoy running streams surrounded by flowers and reeds. They also love to display their aerobatic skills and to feel the wind on their wings. The kaleidoscope formations seem to be among their favorites – although they keep staring at the RAF Red Arrows for inspiration.

Lions :: Leões

Recently I had a request for a custom order which included making a pair of lion earrings. I had tried making lions in the past but the result was always far from I expected a lion to be. I thought of making them many times but it got postponed over and over because I was afraid of the result. So when I accepted this request I knew I had to try it again and get them right.

The research part was fun: looking at lion’s photos and videos, reading more about them, understanding their shape and colour. And when I got into clay it wasn’t as hard as I was expecting… there were a few trials but in the end they came out just as I had imagined them and I think my client is as happy as I am. What about you, do you like them?

Rooks and bishops :: Torres e Bispos

This Christmas I was able to make a few more chess pieces for the “Scots against Vikings” chess set. I was able to build the rooks for both parties and the Scottish bishops. Since I am not being historically accurate I thought it would be nice to make a couple of druids with tartan belts. The set is looking rather amusing and I am expecting to make some more pieces soon. I hope that you like them (they were very much enjoyed by their new holder).

One of the projects I had more fun with in 2013 was the polymer clay monthly challenge. It was amazing to share my work with so many brilliant artists and it pushed me to experiment with new things.

I thought it would be nice to make a mosaic with all my projects, but also to present my 12 favourite pieces from other people. It wasn’t easy to stick to 12 pieces so I invite you to explore the group gallery on Flickr. I hope you enjoy it!

An inspiring 2014 :: Um 2014 inspirador

It’s been a quiet beginning for 2014. I am taking the time to work on my ideas for the Little Creatures and it feels good to slow down. I look around and I have this image of seeds germinating slowly underneath the ground before sprouting in the spring: it feels like the Little Creatures are going through the same process.

I am taking the time to think but I am also sitting at my workbench playing with clay. I am experimenting with new critters and playing with colour. It feels good to be able to work on models, making colour palettes, and if needed, start again until a creature takes its final shape.

I hope you are also having an inspiring beginning for 2014!
